Fly Fishing/Tying Lessons
Whether you want to learn the sport of fly fishing, sharpen your skills, learn some new tricks, or just need
one of our short hour long "Saltwater Check-out" classes you're in the right place. We have classes for the beginner fly fisher,
the advanced fly fisher and even those wishing to learn fly tying.
Instructor: All classes are instructed by Jim Oliver (with assistants when needed). Jim Oliver has been fly fishing since old enough to hold a bamboo rod
while fly fishing with his father in the Colorado
high country creeks. Now at age 50+, Jim brings his experience from fly fishing in many locations around the world both saltwater and freshwater;
working as an Alaska fly fishing guide; owning and operating his fly fishing
guide business that still operates in Alaska and Cape Cod; graduate of the Florida Keys Fly Fishing School; hosting
many fly fishers here in Belize; creating the successful all
catch-and-release international Tres Pescados Slam Tournament fly fishing event; opening and operating the Tres Pescados Fly Shop; and
finally, creating the Tres Pescados fly rod series of fast saltwater fly rods made in Belize. Jim also brings years of fly tying experience
from a high of tying 1,500 flies annually for his Alaska guide business.
What we teach: Our beginner classes teach the basics of fly fishing including the basic design and use of the fly rod, fly reel,
fly line, leaders, saltwater flies, and knots. You'll also learn basic saltwater casting techniques while being able to practice
your casts with guidance from the instructor and assistants as well as how to set the hook and land any of the saltwater fish we target.
In addition, current catch-and-release procedures are taught. You'll also be introduced to the gear available to enhance
the saltwater fly fishing experience.
Our advanced class teaches the techniques used to increase the enjoyment of saltwater fly fishing such as the double haul cast,
side casting, the Belgium cast, spotting the fish, the type of areas the fish typically hang out, working with your guide, saltwater
leader construction, use of flies.
Saltwater Check-out: This 1 hour class is for the arriving saltwater fly fisher looking for a warmup to the next guide days on the water.
You get some quick tips to help you reach the fish. No pressure just some minor corrections that will help your casts on the windy Belize flats
and some quick fish sighting tips that will help you work as a team with your guide.
Fly Tying: We also teach fly tying basics and instruct on all saltwater patterns used in fishing tarpon, bonefish, permit,
snook and other saltwater species. You'll learn all about the use of tying vises, bobbins, hackle pliers, whip finishers,
and more as well as the use of materials such as bucktail, chenille, bead eyes, dumbell eyes, feathers, flash-a-bou, mylar,
threads, wrapped weight, tubing, and more. Create professional flies for a fraction of the cost or experiment on a signature fly
that all of the saltwater fly fishers will be using next year.
